Work begins on Fehmarnbelt Tunnel

CNN reports that after ten years of planning, work is beginning on the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel connecting Denmark and Germany. It is due to open in 2029. The 18km immersed tunnel, is one of Europe’s largest infrastructure projects, with an anticipated cost of over €7 billion. It will provide two two-lane motorways (two lanes in each direction), plus a double-track railway line. Today, traffic between Hamburg and Copenhagen either goes by ferry, or via a longer overland route through Jutland, so the main aim is to reduce travel distances and travel times, making road and rail options shorter and more competitive with air.

This project is one of the TEN-T priority projects, and a critical “missing link” in the Scan-Med corridor, and it benefits from close to €1bn of EU funds.
