Corona Crisis leads to 5% Drop in NL Rail Freight

Railfreight.com reported full year rail freight figures for the Netherlands in 2020, showing a 5% decrease in total tonne-kilometres in 2020 compared to the previous year. The reduction can be attributed to the impact of the Corona Crisis, especially the decrease in car production, and also to the effect of line closures due to maintenance between Zeveaar (NL) and Oberhausen (DE). The downturn occurred in the middle of 2020, but by the end of the year, volumes were in excess of 2019 levels. The transport of both inputs to (e.g. energy products and steel) and outputs (new cars) from automotive sector is an important component rail freight demand.
