High water causing disruption in Europe’s waterway networks

Heavy rainfall and flooding during July has caused disruption to inland waterway transport in the border regions of western Germany, eastern Belgium and southeast Netherlands. It is expected that after roughly a week of disruption, most of the main transport routes will soon reopen, but with limitations due to hazards such as high water levels, strong currents, debris in the water and cases of submerged vessels.

In Limburg in the Netherlands, it was reported that from 15 July, all traffic was curtailed, with vessels having to find safe mooring places.
